I assumed the products would be very similar in composition too, but they are not. This is why people make such a distinction about which product they choose. The ingredients used, and the insect pests targeted are varied in different cat flea treatments. Something which looks very similar, it kills fleas and you drop it onto your cats skin, are in fact very different entities.

What Does Advantage Cat Flea Treatment Do?

Advantage Flea Cats treatment kills adult fleas and flea larvae. The theory is that it kills fleas so quickly they will be unable to lay eggs. Larvae are killed within 20 minutes so they are unable to progress to adulthood. This two sided attack means the flea life-cycle is stopped. This shows the product is faster at killing fleas than the market leader. But, whether the extra 12 hours of flea free life is that important is a personal choice. I suppose it depends on how bad the initial infestation is. On an ongoing basis, this elimination of 98-100% of fleas within 12 hours as opposed to 24 will have no benefit as there will be no live fleas to deal with if you use the cat flea treatment every month as advised.

How Long will Advantage for Cats Work?

Bayer advise their Advantage Flea Cat treatment is effective for one month. They make no claims that it will work for any longer than that, though you may find it does for you. To keep on top of the dormant flea egg situation in your household Advantage should be applied to your cat every month for the entire flea season. In most places this means using Advantage every month for the whole year. In cold winters you may find you do not need to use the product in that season. Though, remember a heated home feels like summer for those fleas.

Between the shoulder blades where your cat cannot get at the liquid is ideal. Putting the liquid between the shoulder blades means all the liquid remains on your cat able to penetrate the oil gland system and become effective efficiently. The active ingredients need to make contact with the skin so they can spread over the whole body. So, emptying the ampule onto your pet's fur will have much less effect. If your cat has particularly dense fur, making it difficult to empty all the liquid onto one patch of skin, apply two spots in the same region.

Advantage Cat Flea Active Ingredients

There is one active ingredient in Advantage, which is Imidacloprid. This is one of a relatively new breed of insecticides, launched in 1991. It is modelled on nicotine, and the adverse effects of high doses are very similar to that of nicotine poisoning.

Imidacloprid

This is an alternative to organophosphates and pyrethrins which were the more dangerous traditional chemical insecticides of the past. Fipronil

Fipronil is the active ingredient in all Frontline Cat Flea & Tick Treatment products. It is an insecticide alternative to traditional organophosphates. One of the key things which makes Fipronil possibly safer than other insecticides is that it bonds much more readily with insect nervous systems than with animal ones. Almost immediately after contact with an insect it over-stimulates the nervous system causing the insect to become over-active and quickly die.

Fipronil Side Effects

In laboratory tests, animals do display symptoms of Fipronil toxicity, but only when given the chemical in their food and on a massive scale. Fipronil is not easily absorbed through the skin but will be absorbed if ingested. This is good news, your cat will be having the product placed on its skin, not in its dinner. Although adverse reactions to Fipronil are extremely rare always check for signs of redness or hair loss at the site the product was administered.

Fipronil is extremely toxic to some birds, fish and water life so should never be casually disposed of. Methoprene

Methoprene is the other active ingredient in Frontline Plus Cat Flea Treatment, which works with the Fipronil to kill flea eggs and larvae. This is not an insecticide, but a biological pesticide. It is a juvenile hormone which acts as a growth regulator. It stops flea eggs and larvae developing and then they die.

Used widely in water cisterns to prevent mosquito larvae developing it is safe for animals (including humans) to ingest and inhale. This is one ingredient considered perfectly innocuous for your cat (at least there is one!).

Overall Frontline Plus Safety

As Frontline Plus is free from organo phosphate insecticides the Natural Resources Defence Council recommend it as being a safe method of cat flea treatment (see here for full report).

For that reason, and the fact it is so effective it seems to be perfectly acceptable to use Frontline. Cat flea treatments are all poisons of some kind or other. That is why they kill insects. But looking at all sides of the argument I really feel this is an acceptable cat flea medicine to be using.

I would however, limit its use on any cat which was unwell or particularly old without first consulting my Vet. This is just to ensure I do not cause a cat already in poor health any further distress.

This product is one I have used for years, and so far am unable to find any reason to discontinue using. The ingredients are safe for mammals and it is very effective. I particularly like that this is both a cat flea and a cat tick preventative. I've had a little look at what the top ten best-selling cats flea treatment products are and how they compare, in relation to pests eradicated and chemicals used. Now it is time to delve a little deeper.

I shall look at each product in turn to determine exactly how they work, what they fight and what the pros and cons are of using each one. Hopefully then I will have a clearer idea of what the best cat flea and tick treatment is.

Cat Flea and Tick Treatment Comparison Continued - Price

I started a review of the best-selling cat flea and tick treatments with the hope of including a price comparison. I have to confess I admit defeat. There are too many different types of product included to do any kind of price comparison which would be fair.

I expected all the treatments to be pretty similar. But, the top ten best-selling cats flea treatment are surprisingly different. They target different insect pests, or different stages of the flea and tick's life-cycles. Their effective periods differ too. I do not feel a price comparison for products which last different amounts of time, or destroy different insect pests would be at all useful.

When looking for a cat flea treatment it seems, ascertaining what pests you specifically need to target should be a priority. If you like the idea of a monthly 'spot-on' treatment or favour 'flea sprays' or 'collars' you may have a few to choose from, but the over-riding determining factor for the price of any cat flea treatment is what insects are targeted.

Cheap Cat Flea Treatment

Flea Shampoos and Flea Collars are generally the cheapest option, followed by Flea Sprays. Flea collars can be extremely effective and tend to be very good value for money. However, you need to be happy about your cat wearing a collar. Shampoos and sprays are proven effective but offer only short-lived cat flea protection.

Overall the spot-on treatments offer the most consistent protection but they all vary depending on what insect or stage of flea they hope to eradicate.

If you have an indoors cat unlikely to be regularly re-infested with fleas then the Hartz UltraGuard One Spot for Cats must be a contender as your cats flea treatment. It is by far the cheapest product in this category at less than $5 for three months cat flea protection. This is what I would love to use on my cat. I would definitely opt for this as it really minimises the risk of your cat reacting to the insecticide ingredients. But, I doubt many of us will find the product suited to our cat's lifestyle. Usually our cats are prone to pick up new adult fleas regularly so Hartz UltraGuard One Spot would only be suitable in conjunction with a flea shampoo treatment or manual removal of fleas with a flea comb.

Effective Ongoing Cat Flea Treatment

For the average cat which roams both inside and out, fleas will be collected on a continual basis without some form of consistent and effective cat flea treatment. The simplest method (for the cat owner) is a monthly squirt with some chemical insecticide. Their ease of use and consistent prolonged effect is why the various spot-on treatments have really taken over the cat flea treatment market.

Cleverly, all the top brands target different stages in the life cycle of the cat flea as well as offering protection against different additional insect pests. The only thing to do is opt for the product which targets those pests you want to eradicate. Price cannot help you make a choice! All the products which offer effective cat flea protection by eradicating adult fleas as well as their eggs and/or larvae are very similarly priced. For each additional pest controlled a dollar or so price difference occurs.

Your vet should be able to tell you which pests are most problematic in your locality. My advice would be to ask them what insect pests are a problem, then go away and find the product which combats them to avoid being unconsciously 'sold' that product which makes the surgery the most money! Call me cynical but I like to be sure I'm getting unbiased information. Once you know which product best suits your cats needs, by all means head on back to the surgery and buy it from your vet then!

Another thing to keep in mind, is that many of the big spot-on treatment brands offer deals for bulk buys. Ask your supplier how you may qualify. For example Frontline where offering one pack free if six were bought in one go. If you can afford to buy in bulk you may get savings.

Conversely do not be put off by the price of buying a year's worth of the spot-on cats flea treatment. Most brands also supply single doses, which are a good way to try a new method of cat flea protection. If your favoured brand does not, speak to your vet or supplier who may be able to help you get hold of a single month's treatment.

Perhaps unsurprisingly none of the top selling cat flea treatment products can stop all the insect parasites likely to visit your pet. But, many brands do offer protection against both fleas and ticks.

Although it is possible to use some different cat flea and tick treatments in conjunction, many are only safe to use alone. If you are considering using several different products to combat insect pests check with your Vet that the products do not combine dangerously at all.

Remember the more insects you hope to control with your cats flea treatment, the more active chemicals will be involved. If you can get away with less potent concoctions you will save yourself a little money and have to put less insecticides on your pet. However, we must be practical. My cat, is a country cat who loves life on the wild side. There is no way I could hope to protect him from fleas and ticks without using one of the more 'robust' formulations.

To save on the variety of chemicals used on my cat I would opt for Advantage Once-A-Month Topical Flea Treatment for Cats because the double action against both flea larvae and adults makes it a very effective treatment. However, we reside in tick country so for the moment at least we will be sticking with Merial Frontline Plus Flea and Tick Control for Cats and Kittens.

Always consider what stage of the life-cycle each brand treats too. Ideally you want to treat adult fleas as well as their young or larvae. However, you do have to pay for this kind of power. One product Hartz UltraGuard One Spot for Cats for example, only kills flea eggs and larvae. If you have a cat which repeatedly comes into contact with adult fleas this product will not achieve prolonged cat flea protection. But, if your cat is usually housebound and doesn't come into contact with adult fleas Hartz UltraGuard One Spot for Cats may well be perfectly adequate to stop a rare flea infestation. At less than $5 that would be a bargain. Customers have been disappointed when using this to treat a large adult flea population. But, that is not what the product is designed to do. A bonus for using this product is that the active ingredient is Methoprene which is one of the safer insecticide ingredients in use today.

Similarly, for cats who stay inside and rarely encounter flea or tick problems you can save money by using products which have an immediate but no residual effect. Shampoos such as Hartz UltraGuard Plus Foaming Flea & Tick Shampoo are ideal in this situation. They are effective in killing fleas and their eggs but will not continue working. If your cat is unlikely to repeatedly encounter fleas and ticks this is a really cheap way of dealing with the problem. One thing to consider, is that he active ingredient is Allethrin which is actually a pyrethroid, one of the groups of insecticide ingredients of most concern by safety experts.

For a cat who goes outside a lot, the chances are it will keep picking up more adult fleas. So for the outdoors kind of cat, choosing a cat flea treatment which controls adult fleas, such as Merial Frontline Top Spot Flea and Tick Control for Cats and Kittens, should be top priority.

So you see, there is quite a lot to think about. Firstly you need to know your enemy, what insects does your cat have issues with and what insects are a threat in your area. So not all cats flea treatment control the same insect pests. Unfortunately all to often, we really need to consider cat flea, tick and maybe more. This means spending more money and using more chemicals. It is good to find out that there is a difference in all those cat flea treatment brands though. It is easy to be cynical and assume they're all pretty much the same but they really aren't. It would seem, in the world of cat flea treatment you really do get the chemicals you pay for.

My main concern was the annoyance of a scratching cat but my research into problems associated with cat flea & tick infestations, has really brought home just how important regular cat flea and tick treatment is.

I would not consider a cat flea treatment unless it was also a cat tick treatment. Luckily that is nearly always the case with commercial cat flea protection. I wondered about the ingredients in commercial cat flea treatment. If something is able to kill insects can it harm my cat? I think we have to take a view on the risk associated with the problem we are trying to eradicate as opposed to the risk of the product we are using.

Allowing fleas and ticks to take over your feline friend and your home is not a safe option. In fact it would be downright irresponsible to allow it to occur. But, I do not think we should trust our cats flea medicine without finding out what it actually is. With that in mind, allow me to introduce you to the chemical world of flea medication. Cats flea treatment is a massive industry, but their are surprisingly few active ingredients actually being used in the fight against those nasty parasites.

Cat Flea Treatment - The Active Ingredients

Pyrethrins

These kill adult fleas, ticks and lice. Pyrethrins also repel mosquitoes, gnats and flies.
Extracted from chrysanthemum flowers, these are common ingredients in many cat flea treatment products.
Pyrethrins act as a nerve agent in the insect cells killing them by altering the way they process salts.

Etofenprox

This is a pyrethroid compound which means it is synthetic version of pyrethrin. Most pyrethroids are dangerous for cats, etofenprox is a pyrethroid which has been certified safe for cats.
Etofenprox combats fleas, ticks, lice & mosquitoes in the same manner as naturally occurring pyrethroids but is longer lasting.

Fipronil

Kills adult fleas and ticks. Also treats chewing lice.
This synthetic compound is relatively new, but very effective. Applied in an oil carrier, cat flea treatment with fipronil is water resistant. This works by affecting the nervous system of adult insects and causing paralysis and death.

Insect Growth Regulators - Methoprene, Pyriproxyfen (Nylar) & Fenoxycarb

Kill egg and larval stages of fleas by over-riding their own growth stimulating hormones. Insect Growth Regulators prevent the egg and larvae molting and proceeding to the next stage in the flea life-cycle. Unable to molt the immature fleas die.
So far, insect growth regulators have less health concerns than those chemicals which act on the nervous system of insects.

Insect Development Inhibitors -Lufenuron & Diflubenzuron

These compounds prevent the egg & larval fleas developing their hard outer coating causing them to die.

Imidacloprid

This kills adult fleas but has no effect on ticks.
This interferes with insect nerve receptors causing death.

Selamectin

This blocks nerve signals killing adult fleas, ticks and mites. It also kills flea eggs as it is carried onto the skin and fur of your cat.
This is carried through your cat's bloodstream to prevent heart-worm, and into the gut to destroy intestinal parasites.
This is a prescription only cat flea and tick treatment in the United States.

Nitenpyram

This is found in oral flea control and will start killing fleas on your cat within 30 minutes.
Nitenpyram leaves your cat's system within 24 hours so this is only useful to deal with one flea encounter, it has no residual effect.

Diocyl Sodium Sulfoccinate & Undecylenic Acid

Kills fleas, mites, ticks and lice.
The two chemicals combine to penetrate the hard shell of the insect then destroy it.

Many of the active ingredients in your cats flea treatment do not work to kill all stages of the flea and ticks life-cycles. In fact many do not work to combat ticks at all. You need to double check when purchasing a cat flea treatment that it works against all the pests you are concerned about. If ticks are a problem in your area, as they are in mine, I would suggest you need one treatment which is effective against both fleas and ticks. But, if ticks are a rarity for you, a solely cat flea treatment will be just fine. You can always use an additional cat tick treatment if the necessity arrises.

There is some concern about the safety of some ingredients in cat flea treatments. Of most concern are pyrethroids, which can pose a danger to small children and cats. These compounds are much more prevalent in dog flea treatments which is why you should never use dog flea medicines on your cat, without getting your vet to confirm it is safe to do so. As with all insecticides there will be occasional cases of poisonings and concern about their safety. But, on balance I think it is safer for our cats flea treatment to be used than not. Fleas are a much more common threat than chemical side effects. With cat fleas the cause of so many health issues I think the responsible thing to do is use cat flea meds regularly.

However, I would never use a cat flea treatment on a sick, pregnant or nursing animal without consulting my Vet and I would never use the product in any way other than that recommended on the packet.

I had hoped to find some natural wonder remedy for fleas and ticks. But, alas even the natural products that have some affect in combating cat flea, ticks and other insects are often just as dangerous for your cat. Garlic and penny-royal both have some insecticidal qualities but both are toxic to cats. On balance I would rather use a product which is tested and regulated than one which isn't (and is much less effective to boot!). It looks like the cats flea treatment to really work is one which you have to buy.

Cat Tick Treatment - Is it Necessary?

So far I have focused on cat flea medicine as cat fleas are often more obvious problems, possibly because they bite us more often than ticks! But any good cat fleat treatment should also combat ticks. Ticks are not particularly fussy, like fleas they are happy to reside on any hairy mammal. Ticks are more prevalent in some areas than others. In the United States alone there are over 200 varieties of tick. To determine if a cat tick treatment is necessary we need to see when ticks are active and where they live.

Tick Information

Generally ticks are most active in Spring and Autumn. Depending on weather conditions ticks may continue to be a problem throughout the summer. They only visit your pets to feed, spending the rest of their lives in patches of long grass and scrub. Ticks feed by burrowing their heads into the skin and then sucking blood. Once their body is engorged with blood they drop off the host animal. Keeping your cat away from areas of rough scrub from Spring to Autumn is one way of preventing ticks. However this is a very difficult method of cat tick prevention!

Do not be fooled into thinking ticks are a problem only in rural areas with lots of ground cover. Urban parks, gardens and waste-ground are also great places for ticks to live and wait for your cat.

How to Remove a Tick from Your Cat

Most common ticks are very small so we only tend to notice them once they are already feeding and engorged with blood. In this case they should be removed very carefully. The saliva of ticks contains poisons so the aim in tick removal is to get the tick off your cat in one piece and quickly so the tick does not realise what is happening. The longer you take to remove a tick from your cat the more saliva the tick will secrete into your feline friend.

You can purchase special tick tweezers which do grip well, or just use a pair of ordinary tweezers to remove your cat's tick (make sure to sterilise your tweezers afterwards). The main benefit of tick tweezers, for me, is that you never run the risk of passing on any bacteria from the tick to yourself.

Use the tweezers to hold the tick immediately adjacent to your cat's skin. Gently but firmly pull the tick straight out. Do not twist or jerk the tick as this will stress it into releasing more saliva into your cat. Also it will increase the risk of you breaking the tick's body from its head.

Wipe the wound with alcohol or anti-bacterial cream and keep an eye on it, to ensure it does not become infected.

To dispose of the tick you can either submerge it in alcohol for ten minutes or so, or squash it. Do not just release the tick or try to drown it, or it may well return to your cat in future.

Tick Life-Cycle

Ticks generally have at least four stages in their life-cycle:

Tick Eggs are laid in dense vegetation at least several inches high. Female ticks lay between a hundred and many thousand eggs at a time. After a few weeks the eggs hatch into tick larvae.
Tick Larvae are six legged and move into grass or shrub-land in search of their first blood meal, after which they drop to the ground to moult into nymphs.
Tick Nymphs are eight legged and tiny, making them very difficult to spot. They may remain dormant for a year before feeding again. Nymphs require another blood meal before dropping to the ground again and either moulting into further nymph stages or directly into adult ticks.
Adult Ticks also have eight legs and will feed on a new host for up to ten days. Ticks mate on the host animal before the females drop to the ground to lay their eggs.

Whatever the stage of tick, its need for a blood meal puts your cat at risk of tick related problems and tick-borne disease.

Tick Diseases

Because the ticks are channeling into the bloodstream of your cat they are easily able to pass on the diseases they harbour. There are several diseases passed to cats and other mammals by ticks. Many symptoms are similar and the diseases hard to diagnose. If you see any of the following symptoms make sure to advise your vet your cat has had ticks, or been in areas where ticks are likely.

The main diseases passed by ticks to cats are:

Babesiosis, this causes your cat to be lethargic, weak and lose its appetite with pale gums.
Ehrlichiosis, this results in a high fever with muscle ache.
Lyme Disease, this causes lameness, swollen joints, fever, loss of appetite, fatigue, and vomiting. However some infected animals will show no symptoms.
Tick Paralysis, this causes gradual paralysis, progressing from unsteady back legs.
Anapasmosis, is an infection of the white blood cells, causing seizures, lethargy, weight loss and fever.

Diagnosis of tick borne diseases in cats are becoming more common world-wide. At the moment Anaspasmosis and Lyme Disease are the biggest concerns in the United Kingdom but all are prevalent in the United States and Australia.

Cat Tick Problems

Although the serious fear is of ticks passing on the infections and serious complaints already discussed, any contact with a tick can cause your cat more minor but annoying problems too.

Cat tick problems include:

Localised infection, especially if ticks are removed incorrectly.
Swelling.
Allergies to tick bites.
Discomfort and irritation caused while the tick is feeding on your cat.

Ticks do not just pose a threat to your cat, they and all the diseases above are a threat to many mammals including cats, dogs and humans too.

Preventing ticks feeding on your cat is critical in spring and autumn, and advisable through the summer too. With tick diseases being so difficult to diagnose and potentially so serious, prevention is always much more effective than cure.

Cat tick prevention medicine is definitely critical for any cat which ventures out of doors.

Cat Flea Treatment - Cat Flea Lifecycle

Although there are more than several thousand species of flea, the most common type in the United States and Europe is the cat flea, Ctenocephalides feis. The cat flea is the one found on most pets and in most homes. They are not fussy fleas; happy to reside on cats, dogs, people, rodents and birds. When choosing a cat flea treatment it pays to understand a little about the life-cycle of cat fleas and indeed their lifestyles. That way we can see if a particular cat flea medicine is suitable for our pets.

The Life-cycle of the Cat Flea

Fleas tend to live for anything from a few weeks to many months. Warmer weather encourages them to multiply and live longer, which is why so many people suddenly notice a flea infestation in the Spring. During the winter months those fleas were probably still in your home but they were less active, and not reproducing so much.

There are four main stages in the development of the flea:

Eggs - which are usually laid on your pet, but then fall onto carpets and soft furnishings where they are better protected. Eggs can take from a few days to several weeks to hatch. In ideal circumstances the egg will develop into an adult cat flea in a fortnight. Conversely eggs can last up to three months before hatching. Most pesticides fail to penetrate the hard shell of flea eggs.
Larvae - these break free of the egg using a hard tooth-like horn on the top of their head. They are only about 1/4" long but move around eating thefeces of the adult fleas (this is primarily blood). They will also eat any other organic debris they find in carpets and bedding. The larval stage usually lasts a few weeks.
Pupae - the larvae spin a silken cocoon in which the adult flea develops. The flea can emerge within five days, or wait in its cocoon for as long as a year. The pupa are usually deep in carpets and bedding, making them difficult to remove.
Adult Flea - these emerge from the pupal stage when conditions are right. They emerge with rising temperatures, high humidity, carbon dioxide levels and vibrations (indicating host animals are likely to be near). The adult can emerge and jump onto a passing mammal within one second. Each female adult flea can lay as many as 600 eggs.

Although all stages of flea can be found on their hosts (your cat), usually only adults live on board their food source. The eggs, larvae and pupae are morecommonly found in deep carpeting, bedding or even on soil in your garden. This makes them very difficult to eradicate.

You can see how opportunistic the flea is, staying in its egg or pupa until conditions are just right for it to move onto the next developmental stage. This is why it is so critical to apply your cat flea protection regularly.

If you have the most efficient cat flea treatment on the market it will not eradicate your home of all stages of flea development. Flea eggs and pupae are protected against most pesticides. So once conditions are right again eggs will hatch, and pupa will release adults. You must reapply any cat flea treatment repeatedly to kill off new populations as they emerge.

Additional Ways to Destroy Cat Fleas

Most cat flea protection is only effective against the adult and larval stages of fleas. Even if you are able to find a cat flea treatment containing pesticides effective against the eggs and pupae you will be hard pressed to find them all to treat. These stages in the cat flea'slife-cycle hide away deep in the pile of carpets or in bedding and upholstery. So whatever cat flea protection you use you do need to consider a few other methods of flea control if you have a significant flea infestation.

Brush your cat regularly outside. That way those slippery flea eggs do not fall off your cat inside the house.
Wash all pet bedding in hot water.
Vacuum carpets, rugs and upholstered furniture thoroughly. Concentrating on areas where your cat sleeps to remove as many fleas of all stages in their development, plus all the organic debris they will feed on. Once you have thoroughlyvacuumed, seal the bag inside a plastic bag and take outside to stop all those fleas escaping.
If the infestation is really out of control consider steam cleaning carpets and even getting in the experts who can obtain much stronger pesticides than you.

After looking at the secondary problems cat fleas can cause, alongside this information on the lifecycle of the flea. Once again, I am finding that regular cat flea treatment is definitely the way to protect your home and your pets from these nasty biting insects. Because fleas are happy to hide and remain dormant for such long periods of time, we can never apply cat flea medicine and forget about them. We have to regularly reapply flea medication. Cats, dogs and the whole family will benefit from regular flea control measures. Cat flea protection will be much cheaper than dealing with a plague of fleas infesting your home.

First of all, I thought I would find out whether I need to be worried about the odd flea on my feline friend. Is my cat's flea treatment actually necessary? I need to find out how fleas live and breed plus what affect fleas and ticks have on cats. Flea medicine is crucial if fleas are a real pest. So are they? Well, I have been reading my little socks off and can report that fleas are much more nasty than I thought. I suppose, I just see the odd tiny insect jump away and think little more of it, than how itchy their bite is. But it would seem that fleas can be a more serious threat so those cat flea meds are indeed necessary.

Why Your Cats Flea Treatment is Important

The main thing we humans think of about fleas is that they make our pets scratch a lot. That incessant scratching of flea bites is really quite annoying just to listen to. Imagine how irritating it is for your cat. If you have ever experienced a really bad flea epidemic at your home you will know just how annoying and long-lasting the itchiness of a flea bite is. I know its grim, but admit it, if your loved cat is getting bitten, the chances are you will have the odd bite too!

But, that annoying itch and noisy scratch is not the most dangerous aspect of fleas living on your pets. Most cats will cope quite well with a small amount of flea activity. Their regular grooming means they pick off the adult fleas regularly. Secondary Cat Flea Problems

Flea Bite Dermatitis
Anaemia
Tapeworms
Skin Infections

Flea Bite Dermatitis

This occurs when your pet becomes allergic to flea bites or flea activity. It is common in dogs and cats that the waste products from the fleas irritate the skin. This causes the cat even more itching. More itching, means more scratching and more chance of letting infection into skin broken by excessive grooming.

It is not uncommon for flea bite dermatitis to result in large sores and areas of broken skin which pose a serious risk of infection for your furry friend.

Anaemia

Flea anaemia can be a serious problem especially in young, old or unwell cats. The flea infestation is so large, the cat cannot sustain both itself and all those fleas. The cat will be losing so much blood to the fleas that it suffers a problematic loss in red blood cells itself.

Flea anaemia shows as very pale gums, lethargy and general weakness. If left untreated this condition can be fatal.

Tapeworms

These intestinal parasites are more usually passed from your cat coming into contact with tapeworm infested animal feces. However, the flea is also a host for tapeworm, which is then passed to your cat when it swallows the flea. Tapeworm are not usually a serious problem in healthy cats. But, they will cause some distress and can be passed to small children (though this is rare). Tapeworm segments may be noticed in your cats feces or near its bottom. They look like grains of rice. If your cat does have worms it will probably let you know, as its appetite increases in response to the parasite.

Regular cat worming treatment should be standard in your responsibilities of pet ownership. I have only ever missed one worming treatment. Our cat drove me nuts meowing for food almost continually. Now, I have a diary of when hismeds are due as I do not want to go through that again!

Skin Infections

These can be a result of an allergy to the fleas, their saliva, or their dirt, but your cat may have no allergy to fleas at all. Your cat may just literally be scratching too hard. Once the skin is broken it is easy for infection to set in. Usually a skin infection will heal up pretty quickly, so long as the wound is kept clean. But some cats will keep breaking the skin so preventing it from healing. If the wound is large your cat could find the infection spreads into its blood stream. Antibiotics may be necessary, so check with your vet if skin problems are large or slow to heal.

It is easy to wonder if we are over-reacting. But when you think of how small the surface area of your cat's skin is, a relatively small wound can be very significant.

Most of these problems will not be a huge risk to most cats. However, for ill, old or young cats each of these additional symptoms can become life-threatening or at the very least lead to long term health problems. Even is your cat is fit and healthy why make it suffer when there is flea medication cats will appreciate you using! Cat fleas are partial to whatever mammal they find, so your cats flea treatment also protects you too.

If your cat is suffering from these additional symptoms brought on by fleas they will lose condition and deteriorate as they become less able to fight off the fleas and those fleas multiply.

Well, I have to say I am pretty determined that I will be using a cat flea and tick treatment pretty regularly. I thought cat fleas were more of a nuisance, rather than such a nasty pest. The problem now is to work out which cat flea meds I should be using.
